Anti-bullying week

Safety Net, a local children’s charity that produces regular newsletters regarding Child Safety, has produced a special Anti-Bullying Week edition of the Safety Rocks Newsletter.

The theme for this year is “Change Starts with Us” and there are articles on how parents can help children if they are being bullied, learn about TikTok and other live streaming apps and how to keep children safer online; use our resources to help talk to children about safety issues. Here it is:   https://www.safety-net.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Anti-Bullying-Week-newsletter-primary.pdf

Sensations

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! We are just at the end of the first week back and we have an exciting rest of half term to look forward to.

I hope most of you have received and read the minutes from the Community Meeting and I am in discussion with some of you regarding Parent Reps.

As I write, Rainbow have gone off on their trip to Brighton Museum and the school feels calm. It might also be that some children are tired after their week and also after Bonfire Night.

Next week we have Children-in-Need day on the 15th and the week after we are going to be getting involved in tree-planting with 'Just One Tree' Day. Do please keep an eye on your emails for further details.

This week my puja was based around noticing sensations, inner and outer, and using language to describe it. We used words like, 'tingly, heavy, relaxed, open, warm, cool' etc. I found everyone really applied themselves to this in a beautiful and calm way, being 'sensation scientists'. They then noticed if these sensations were pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. Do encourage your children to keep practising!

Next Friday we have Mountain Puja to look forward to.

Best wishes,

Clare

Climate Protest in the park

Our school community joined together today to show support for this global day of action for our Earth. We sang nature songs to passers by to show our compassion for this precious planet.

Welcome Mathis!

Earlier this year we advertised the position of music teacher, and would now like to say a very warm WELCOME to Mathis Richet.

Originally from France, Mathis has more than 20 years’ experience in music facilitating, teaching, event management and performing, having been taught in a Conservatoire.

His fresh approach to lessons keeps up with current music trends, providing great benefits to our pupils.

Mathis is also well-versed in utilising the power of music and sound as therapy, and has witnessed first-hand how much it can help to improve children's concentration, performance and overall well-being.

We wish you many happy years here at The Dharma Primary School.

Our Next Open Mornings...

* Our next Open Mornings will be on Fridays 4th October & 22nd November 2019 *

Open Mornings start at 9am and usually finish by 10.45am. We begin with the school’s weekly puja – the Buddhist equivalent of a school assembly. This often includes a short talk by our Head Teacher, Clare Eddison, on a particular topic related to our ethos, a short meditation and some singing. It is also an opportunity for pupils to present some of their work – a different class will usually contribute each week.

Book via our online booking form, or by calling the office: 01273 502055. Kindly state which date you will be attending.

Ladybirds

We are starting a new parent and child group called ‘Ladybirds’ on Friday mornings 9.30 - 12.

This is open to anyone with a child or children under 5 years old. The intention is that this will provide an Early Years Sangha Group for parents who want to find ideas, support and encouragement for bringing mindfulness into their children’s lives. The group will follow a similar rhythm to our nursery mornings, and will provide a good introduction for those considering a Dharma School education.

The cost will be a termly subscription of £80 per family (£6 per session), or £8 per individual session. Please register & pay at the office if you would like to join us.

See our page for more information.

Vesak Day

Vesak is one of the most important Buddhist festivals. It is also known as Wesak or Buddha Day.

It is a celebration of Buddha's birthday and, for some Buddhists, marks his enlightenment (when he discovered life's meaning).

It is also a time to reflect on his teachings and what it means to be Buddhist.

Watch this BBC Newsround video to see what children from our school had to say.

Buddhist meditation group

Our Headteacher, Clare, is offering a Buddhist meditation group to the community of parents and carers, staff and trustees. The form of the group will consist of a half hour sit, a structured sharing about meditation practice and possibly a short talk too.

Clare said, “My aspiration is that it will deepen not only our practice but our connection to one another and allow us to develop our kindness and wisdom collectively.”

Our ‘reverse advent calendar’ this year was a wonderful Gingerbread House in the main foyer. Families can donate items for a food bank run by Brighton Voices in Exile for asylum seekers and refugees.
